It was a triumphant weekend for four Barrhead teens, who participated in their first curling bonspiel of the year Jan. 4-5.
Brayden Borle (skip), Ryan DenBroeder (lead), Jacob Kiselyk (second), and Stuart Phillips (third), headed to Warburg for the two- day tournament, where they won all four of their games and claimed first place in their age division of 17 and under.
The 15-year-old boys played against teams from Warburg, Leduc and Stony Plain, with a performance Stuart's father Rod Phillips said was great.
The boys ended up outscoring their opponents 46-12 in total.
"They won quite convincingly," said Rod. "And they had a really good time. They're a fun team."
With the exception of a Pembina Hills tournament in Westlock, this bonspiel was the first time the young team played outside of Barrhead.
"This time was the first time to really go outside of Barrhead and play against kids their own age," said Rod.
Experience on the team ranges from two years to nine.
Right now, Stuart and Brayden play three times a week, and Jacob and Ryan play twice.
The four of them play together Thursday night for juniors, and Friday nights in the men's league against adults.
The boys entered into the tournament to gain some bonspiel practice before the high school curling zones in Slave Lake, which is coming up Feb. 21 and 22.
"They wanted to get a practice before they head to the high school zones," said. "This bonspiel was their warm up before they see how they do with the rest of the zone. "
