Jason and Lyle Schaffrick won the Canadian Tire Angler’s Cup fishing derby in Slave Lake on Friday and Saturday, June 19-20. After the first day the boys were in third place with their first two fish having a combined weight of 7.12 pounds and their next two fish at 8.88 pounds for a 16 pound day one total.
Friday fishing had nice weather and calm waters, but Saturday fishing was miserable weather with rough wavy waters. As miserable as the weather was, the Schaffrick brothers managed to fish hard again and have top weigh-in weight of the day. Their combined total weight for day two was 15.86 pounds with one of the fish weighing 5.1 pounds.
The Schaffrick’s had a total derby weight of 31.86 pounds, which was enough to claim the $40,000 first place prize, narrowly over second place, which had a weight of 31.82 pounds. The gentlemen also had additional prizes for their weights over the two days which gave them an extra $6,000.
The boys said that some of their fishing success could be credited to the bait they got at our local Barrmart. They would also like to thank the sponsors and organizers of the fishing derby and they look forward to defending their title next year.
But for this year, they still have another fishing derby and that is the Walleye Classic at Shaw’s Point, which they are looking forward to. Hopefully they can do as well there as they did this weekend.
