The Barrhead Flyers fought until the very end during a weekend tournament hosted in Barrhead.
The tournament ran on Saturday, Nov. 1, and Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Barrhead Agrena.
Teams included the Lloydminister Bobcats, the Edmonton Eagles, the Edmonton Thunderbirds, the Barrhead Flyers, and Whitecourt.
During the tournament Barrhead played both the Edmonton Eagles, and the Edmonton Thunderbirds.
On the Saturday, the Flyers took on the Eagles during the first home tournament of the season.
The Flyers fought hard until the end, but eventually lost against the opposing team on home ice.
The first period consisted of three goals by the Eagles, with a total of 18 shots on net by the team.
The second period was much the same, with the Eagles scoring yet another four goals on the Barrhead goalie.
The Eagles once again kicked it up a notch, scoring another three goals for their team.
The end score for the game was 11-0.
Penalties included body checking, roughing, tripping, and hooking, all from the Flyers.
The Eagles received penalties for interference, roughing, tripping, unsportsmanlike conduct, and body checking.
On Sunday the Flyers played the Edmonton Thunderbirds for their last game of the weekend.
The first penalty of the game went to Colton Bondarchuk from the Flyers, for hooking, which was soon followed by another penalty for Flyers player Ethan Nanninga for body checking.
The first period proved tough for the Flyers, with the Thunderbirds scoring a total of three goals.
The third goal was a shot over the left shoulder of Flyers goalie, Gideon Hall.
A third penalty was given to the team with 14 seconds left in the period. Logan Fischer received two minutes in the box for slashing.
The Flyers went into the third shorthanded due to the call, with Fischer hitting the ice again nearly two minutes in.
The first goal of the period was scored by the Thunderbirds, on a breakaway from a group on the right of the net.
Shortly after the goal, a penalty was given to one of the team’s players.
Two more goals were scored by the Thunderbirds, with the fifth goal of the game coming from a breakaway being passed in front of the net, and sneaking in past the goalie.
The sixth goal of the game was stopped by the goalie, only to bounce off of his stick and into the top of the net, landing just beyond the red line.
Dawson Bacon received two minutes for body checking, as well as fellow teammate Connor Carroll.
Flyers player, Keenan Stranaghan also received time in the box for tripping, at 7:26.
The third period proved just as successful for the Thunderbirds, with another goal for the team.
Another body checking penalty was handed out to Thunderbirds’ player Owen Lai.
The Barrhead Flyers proved that they will put up quite the fight when playing on home ice, and although they didn’t receive a winning title in the tournament, they played it through until the end.
