All 23 members of the Barrhead Atom teams will be sporting brand new jerseys thanks to Jonathan Sutherland’s winning entry to DuPont Pioneer’s Hockey Jersey Bonanza.

The contest required an essay about what hockey means to the participant, and to their community. The winner was chosen from entries received all across Western Canada.

“This is very exciting for the team,” said assistant coach Dave Bondarchuk. “They are thrilled to have new jerseys.”

Barrhead Pioneer Hi-Bred sales representative Craig Schmidt presented the bright green jerseys to Sutherland and the rest of the Barrhead Atom Elks at a team practice Oct. 12.

Pioneer has conducted the contest since 2010, and has distributed over $100,000 worth of hockey jerseys over the course of the three years. Schmidt said the contest is one way Pioneer has a positive impact on local hockey programs.

“Pioneer knows how important hockey is to communities across Western Canada,” said Schmidt. “We believe strongly in giving back to communities where our customers live and work.”

Over $40,000 worth of hockey jerseys will be awarded to all 20 lucky winners and their teammates this fall. The minor hockey teams who won jerseys will have them imprinted with individual team logos and player numbers.
