It was a long but successful weekend for one Barrhead men’s curling team, as they successfully took the victory during the Men’s Open Bonspiel.
Sixteen teams competed in the competition at the Barrhead Curling Rink, which took place Friday, March 1 to Saturday, March 2, but only one could come out on top.
In final game Saturday night, skip John Strand, third Roy Hewitt, second Terry Franchuk, and Daryl Lindquist took the win.
The men played one game Friday night and three Saturday, winning all four. Though there were about seven teams from out of town, the winning curlers ended up only played against other teams from Barrhead.
“We kept playing guys we play all the time,” laughed Strand.
The men only had one hope going into the tournament, and that was to win. Strand said they were happy to take first place, and they all enjoyed the tough competition of a close game.
“That was the big thing, it was close. That’s what you want,” he said. “It’s much more fun when it’s close right to the end.”
Three members of the team have been curling together for 10 years now, with the newest member having joined two years ago.
“When you get a team together that you like, you want to keep curling with them,” said Strand. And that’s just what the team will continue to do.
With the season nearing its end, the men will be competing with the hopes of another victory in the men’s league finals at the end of March.
