Sometimes it just isn’t your night.

On Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Barrhead Agrena, the Bantam Pirates hockey team were defeated by the Stony Plain Predators by a score of 13 to 1.

The game was supposed to be the first game of a two game series to see who would represent Zone 3 in the Provincial Championship Tournament. In the provincial qualifiers, if a team is defeated by 10 goals or more in the first game they are automatically eliminated.

In order to make it to the final qualifying round, the Pirates had defeated Whitecourt and Athabasca.

Within the first four minutes of the game the Predators scored their first goal of the game and they never looked back.

The Pirates, who were missing two of their stronger players, one from injury, the other who is serving a one game suspension, knew they would be in tough facing a strong Predator team. To replace the missing players the Pirates added two players who regularly play in peewee.

By the end of first period Stony Plain would score four more goals to end the period 5 to 0. The Predators would score five more goals in the second period and three more in the final period and outshot the Pirates 77 to 15.

Even though the Pirates were eliminated from the Provincial Championship tournament it doesn’t mean their season is over. The Pirates are still in contention for the 1660 League championship, with the regular season ending on Feb. 21.
