Gold is the only colour that our Wolverines recognize.
For the second year running the Barrhead team took top honours in Tier 4 of the 1660 League.
Yet it was far from a foregone conclusion. The Wolverines had to scrap all the way to earn their reward after a thrilling seesaw game against CNN Bantam 1.
It was this never-say-die attitude that drew most praise from head coach Allan Measures.
“This was an awesome result for our boys,” he said. “They played really hard and never quit.”
The Wolverines claimed their banner on Sunday night after a hectic few days, which tested their fitness levels to the limit.
Last Wednesday, they overcame CNN 4-2 at the Agrena, with goals by Lukas Weeks, Brandon Critchley and a brace from Peyton Measures. Then they went to Chestermere for a tournament where they played four games.
Come Sunday evening, the Wolverines faced CNN again at the Bon Accord Arena.
If they were tired, it never showed, certainly not enough to give their opponents any psychological advantage.
The Wolverines came out full of energy and quickly took a two-goal lead before being pegged back.
By the end of the second period the score was tied 4-4. It was a fast-paced game and perhaps some fatigue had crept into the Wolverines’ play.
They had also suffered the misfortune of losing a player to a hit on the head.
CNN went ahead in the third, but the Wolverines refused to lie down and managed to tie the game up 6-6.
With a tied game, the Wolverines won gold, thanks to their earlier victory over CNN. It meant they had a 10-8 goals advantage.
For Measures the result capped another successful season in which he has seen his young charges show dramatic improvement.
“They have improved in every area of their game since the start of the season,” he said. “To see such progress is the greatest reward for a coach.”
