Barrhead swimmers score nine medals at Penguin meet on Nov. 2

The Barrhead Swim Club came away with a total of two gold, three silver and four bronze medals from their first meet of the year, which was hosted by the Penguin Swimming Club at MacEwan University in Edmonton on Nov. 2.

The Barrhead club brought a total of 18 swimmers to the closed invitational meet, which was attended by seven other swim clubs.

“They did well for their first meet,” said club registrar Jaclyn Miller, noting that many of their swimmers had never attended a meet before.

Swimmers were slotted into different categories depending on age. Sydney Miller, who was born in 2005, was in a 13 and over category, meaning that she competed against other swimmers who were in the 17 and 18 age range.

Nonetheless, she competed quite well, scoring a gold medal in the 50-metre breaststroke, a silver medal in the 50-metre breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 200-metre medley. Miller also placed fifth in the 50-metre freestyle and butterfly events.

Kyler Demskie, who was born in 2010, came home with a gold medal in the 25-metre breaststroke, silver in the 25-metre butterfly and bronze in the 60-metre backstroke. He also finished fourth in the 100-metre medley and sixth in the 50-metre freestyle.

Samantha Hallock, who was born in 2003, placed second in the 25-metre backstroke. She also finished fifth in the 50-metre backstroke and 50-metre breaststroke and eighth in the 200-metre medley.

Lincoln Greenstien finished with bronze medals in the 25-metre breaststroke and the 25-metre butterfly. He also had a seventh-place showing in the 100-metre medley.

Other top ten results from the Penguin meet are as follows:

Colby McCarthy, who was born in 2007, placed fifth in the 200-metre medley, seventh in the 50-metre butterfly, ninth in the 50-metre backstroke and 10th in the 50-metre breastroke.

Duncan Wild, who was born in 2004, finished eighth in the 50-metre backstroke, ninth in the 200-metre medley and 10th in the 50-metre freestyle.

Kobyn Kirchner, who was born in 2010, finished eighth in the 100-metre medley and 10th in the 25-metre butterfly.

Kerstane Samuel, who was born in 2012, had a ninth place finish in the 100-metre medley.

Ashlee Laing, who was born in 2003, achieved a seventh place finish in the 200-metre medley and 10th in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Brooklyn Kramm, who was born in 2011, achieved eighth place in the 25-metre breaststroke.

Lucas Kerstane, who was born in 2011, achieved a 10th place finish in the 100-metre medley.

Kiera Wegwitz, who was born in 2002, finished ninth in the 100-metre medley.

Bailey Smith, who was born in 2007, finished 10th in the 200-metre medley.

Next up for the Barrhead Swim Club is the Cookie Classic, which will take place at the Ponoka Aquaplex on Dec. 7-8.
