Sixteen teams competed in the Barrhead Mixed bonspiel over the weekend, and Barrhead was represented well.

In the A Final March 16, two Barrhead area teams went head to head for the championship title. Joel Thomsen, Courtney Thomson, Brian White and Michelle Rau were up against Wayne Newman, Joe Zacharuk, Jaclyn Miller, and Eileen Zacharuk.

The game was close, but in the end only one team could come out on top. After a long two days, Newman, Miller and the Zacharuks sealed the deal in the final to win the bonspiel.

The winners played one game Friday night, then three on Saturday. In order to win the A final, a team must win all four of their games, and that’s just what Newman, Miller and the Zacharuks did.

Joe said the first two games were really fun, but the third of the tournament was the most exciting.

“We were down with two ends left, and we had to steal in number seven and steal in the eighth end because we didn’t have last rock,” he said. “That was a tough one.”

In the final the soon-to-be-victors were behind their opponents once again. However they were able to come back with a four ender just before stealing three.

The team has been playing together in the mixed league for five years now, and this isn’t the first time they claimed an overall victory. The team won the Barrhead Mixed bonspiel in 2010 as well.

“It’s always nice to win,” laughed Joe. “We had a blast.”
