Amy Kobzey’s skills on the basketball court have not gone unnoticed.

She has been a standout player for the basketball team at Edwin Parr Composite for a number of years, and she will continue her career on the hardwood this fall when she attends Grande Prairie Regional College.

Kobzey has accepted a scholarship to attend the college, where she will play with the Wolves basketball team. The women’s basketball team at the college has a proven track record of success, and they are currently ranked second in the nation. The soon-to-be EPC graduate is looking forward to becoming a part of that winning tradition.

“Grande Prairie has been scouting me for three years. They’ve stuck with me and I stuck with them,” explained Kobzey, who also entertained offers from other schools. “Knowing the coaches there and having a comfortable relationship with them did help. They were the easiest decision.”

EPC basketball coach Wade Hicks played his college basketball at Grande Prairie, so he was fully confident in recommending the school to Kobzey. And he’s excited to see another EPC athlete take their game to the next level.

“It will be a really good fit for her. The coaches there are awesome and they have a phenomenal team this year. It’s a fantastic program and a good chance for her to continue on playing.”

Having spent so much time on the court with Kobzey in recent years, Hicks was not at all surprised to see her become a player of interest for college programs.

“Amy has always been a kid that we knew would have a chance coming out of high school,” said the coach. “She’s a very athletic girl, pretty quick, and she’s 5’11 so she’s got good size for college ball.”

Kobzey has only been playing the game for six years, but she has developed her impressive skills relatively quickly. She may be a natural athlete, but a lot of hard work has gone into her development as well.

“I just enjoy it, and being tall, it works well,” she said, noting she started taking her future in the game seriously when she was first approached by Grande Prairie.

And since her time on the EPC team has accounted for a lot of her favorite high school experiences, it makes sense to continue that journey in college.

“When I look back (on high school), most of my memories are from the basketball trips, and the girls on the team,” she said.

When she’s not busy on the court, she’ll be working towards her Bachelor of Physical Education, with an eye towards a future as a teacher or coach.

She has what it takes, according to one coach.

“She has a lot of skill, and she also knows she’s got things to work on,” said Hicks. “She’s going into a program that has been very interested in her for a long time. She’ll improve tons. I look forward to seeing her play at the next level.”

If her play in high school is any indication, Amy Kobzey has a long and successful career in college basketball to look forward to.
