The Barrhead Senior Boys Gyphons team came within two minutes of capturing third place in the BCHS Senior Gryphons Basketball tournament hosted on Feb. 26 and 27.
With about two and a half minutes left to play in the bronze medal game, the Gryphons were leading by six points against the Mayerthorpe Tigers.
That’s when the Tigers scored five unanswered baskets to take the lead.
The Gryphons however were able to close the gap to only one point in a buzzer beater layup.
On the girls side the Lady Gryphons lost in the bronze medal game to the Edson Pacers by a score of 48 to 38.
In the previous game, the girls’ team had a chance to qualify for the championship, but unfortunately they couldn’t beat a stubborn Bonnyville squad.
At the end of the first quarter, the Gryphons were losing to Bonnyville 9 to 13. A strong second quarter reversed the team’s fortunes and at the end of the half they led by a score of 27 to 19.
At the end of the third quarter the Gryphons were leading by 34 to 26 and even though the game was close, it looked like Barrhead was in control heading into the fourth quarter.
Bonnyville slowly chipped away at the Gryphon’s lead and tied the game (39 to 39) with only three seconds remaining. Unfortunately for the Gyphons they weren’t able to score with so little time left and the game went into a five-minute overtime period. At about the two minute mark in the extra quarter, Bonnyville went on a small run, which the Gryphons were not able to respond to.
The final score of the game was 52 to 43 for Bonnyville.
