The Bible Society is teaming up on May 28 with Women on Wheels for their Bike for Bibles fundraiser.

This ride will replace the go-at-your-own-rate ride.

Bike for Bibles started in Australia in the ’90s and has swept across the planet.

Rides have been held across Canada since 2004. For the previous three years, Chuck Mortimer has organized the Bike for Bibles ride out of Barrhead, which usually takes place on the last Saturday in May.

“We’ll be gathering outside the Barrhead Anglican Church for 9 a.m. Saturday morning and by 9:30 a.m. will be leaving for our ride,” said Mortimer.

More than 15 riders will be participating in the ride that will wind all around the county from Thunder Lake, to Meadowview, on to Belvedere, then to Manola and concluding at the Barrhead United Church.

“The Barrhead United Church agreed to bring lunch out to us when we stop at the Meadowview corner if the weather is nice. Otherwise they’ll be meeting us at the Belvedere Hall if the weather is bad,” said Mortimer.

The Bible Society of Canada is teaming up with Women on Wheels as well as other riders to help raise money to purchase bibles.

“Each rider is asked to find sponsors. The money that they raise will be received and used to buy bibles for prison ministry across Canada,” said Mortimer.

Last year, the Bike for Bibles ride raised about $2,000.

“I’m the chairman of the Bible Society of Northern Alberta, and it’s events like this that really encourage me,” said Mortimer

The ride should conclude around 4 p.m. at the Barrhead Anglican Church, where a barbecue will be fired up for some dinner and good times.

“We won’t all come in together, as some riders are faster than others. But it’s not a race. Last year it rained so we didn’t go up to Manola. If the weather co-operates with us this year we’ll head up to Manola, but if the weather is bad than we’ll just ride up from Belvedere,” said Mortimer.
