Blackhawks in shutout victory against EG715

The Blackhawks may have recorded a 5-0 victory against EG715, but coach Lee Abernathy was not best pleased.

“The girls did not play well,” he said. “We only played about 18 minutes of the game, the rest was very scrambly.”

The Barrhead Midget B side took on the Edmonton side at Castledowns Arena on Sunday, Nov. 18.

Three of the goals came in the second period – Morgan Melzer grabbing a brace and Justine Hunter striking home to send the Blackhawks into the third 3-0 up.

With Jamie Chomay and Cora Rosychuk finding the net in the third, the Blackhawks’ win had an emphatic look.

Hunter helped out with three assists. Shonda Rossman had a pair of assists and Ashleigh Yelland also chipped in with an assist.

Abernathy found an explanation for the Blackhawks’ below par performance.

“I think we played down to their level too much instead of playing our own game,” he said. “It was nice to see our defence produce a lot of points though.”

It was the second successive shutout game for the Blackhawks. On Sunday, Nov. 11, they overcame Fort Saskatchewan 3-0, a result that followed victory over Redwater and defeat against Edmonton’s EG717 Warriors.

Earlier in the season the Blackhawks beat EG716 and Leduc, but lost 2-6 at home to Onoway Eagles.

Next game for last season’s zone champions is on Dec. 2.

Meanwhile, on the Barrhead Midget side, the Renegades ended 3-3 with Riviere Qui Barre in a road game last Friday.

It could have been so much better for the Renegades who grabbed the initiative in the first period, scoring goals through Nic Murrell at 15:25 and Troy Starman at 0:43.

The away team pulled one back in the second period, so the game entered the third nicely poised.

Koby Adams scored the Renegades’ third goal at 15:46, only for Riviere Qui Barre to stage a late comeback, scoring at 8:38 and 3:34.

The tie follows two early season losses against Vegreville and Sturgeon.

The Renegades next entertain Westlock at the Agrena on Saturday.
