BOYLE - A battle of the Blazers for the U15 North Eastern Alberta Hockey League Tier 5 championship last weekend, ended with the coveted banner making its way back to Boyle.

The U15 Boyle Blazers won the championship with a drubbing of the Lloydminster Blazers 9-2 Friday night at the Millview Recreational Complex in Boyle, followed by a 6-2 win on the road Saturday to secure the series win.

Brauc Bourque scored two with Ethan Auger and Harley Irving potting two more to take a fast 4-0 lead Friday night. Lloydminster finally responded about six minutes into the second, but Boyle was able to score five more — three more from Irving, one from Brody Maloney and one from Brody Szmyrko.

The story was much the same in Lloydminster Saturday with Boyle taking an early lead and trudging forward to the banner. Leighton Grant and Irving helped take the 2-0 lead into the second, then two more from Brayden Wellon, and one each from Maloney and Seth Ergang, made for the 6-2 win.

The Blazers finished fifth in Tier 5 after the 18 game regular season with a 6-8-4 record and received a bye into the playoff round against Lloydminster, which finished eight of eight teams. Maloney was the team leader in points with 19 goals and 23 assists and finished third in the league, while teammate Brayden Wellon was fifth in league scoring with 21 goals and 15 assists in 17 games.

The season is not quite done yet for the Blazers who will participate in an Edmonton tournament in two weeks, and while no championships are up for grabs, they’ll still be playing hard for bragging rights.

The U11 Blazers finished up their hockey season on a high note Feb. 26, as they racked up 30 goals in two games against the Onion Lake Border Chiefs in Onion Lake.

The Blazers had a 6-2-2 record over the season with Luke Szmyrko leading the way with 28 goals and seven assists. Lylah Wellon was second in scoring with 15 goals and seven assists, while Owen Nikipelo rounded out the Top 3 scorers with 13 goals and eight assists.
