Things at the Boyle Curling Club are rocking and rolling for yet another season.
According to club president Candy Nikipelo, the number of curlers is holding steady with a total of six rinks playing in the Wednesday night ladies league and seven teams in the mens league that play Tuesday nights.
“That’s new night for the men and so far it’s been good. We may even get an eighth team,” she said.
“Other than that, the ice is beautiful and we are looking forward to good curling this season.”
However, Nikipelo is hoping the sport can attract a few new and younger participants to ensure the future of not only curling, but of the great facility they have in Boyle.
“We still run four great bonspiels here each year and, yes we have to fundraise in order to help offset some of our expenses,” she stated.
“But it would be a shame to lose this facility.”
And one of those bonspiels is the 4th Annual Brad Nikipelo Memorial that goes Friday and Saturday at the club.
“Its named for my nephew Brad, who passed away tragically at 22 in 2010,” she stated.
“We wanted to honor him in a way that he would have loved, as he was on the curling board when he passed. It’s small, only 12 teams, many of whom are family and friends of Brad, but anyone is welcome to enter.”
Nikipelo added that the bonspiel uses kind of a hunting theme as that too was near and dear to Brad’s heart.
