It was an all-out effort for the Boyle Huskies senior boys basketball team at a tournament in Westlock over the weekend.
Hosted by St. Mary’s School, the tournament started out a bit flat for the Huskies, who struggled in an opening game loss to Holy Trinity Academy from Drayton Valley.
Head coach Darrell Bergmann explained the team had similar troubles in their home tournament.
“The boys came out a little flat. We had problems getting defensive rebounds, which let to second chance points for Trinity,” Bergmann said.
“We also struggled finishing at the offensive end. Missed lay ups and short jumpers killed us.”
That same story played out in the Huskies second game versus Living Waters out of Stoney Plain.
“We again had problems rebounding and finishing around the basket,” he stated.
“Both games were definitely winnable, but we just can’t give up second chances and miss lay ups.”
The teams final game against Devon proved to be much better.
“The boys played much better against a very big – as in tall – team out of Devon. They had a six foot, seven inch starting center, who we limited to only two points. The boys rebounded much better and played strong defensively, but again just couldn’t finish around the basket.
“I do have to give my boys credit, no matter what the score or opponent, they never quit and also work hard. The boys always stay upbeat and are ready to battle.”
The boys will take a break this weekend before heading off Feb. 20 to a tournament in Vegreville. They will be joined by the Huskies senior girls there, who are on the court this weekend in Westlock.
