Tryouts for the North Central Bulls AA hockey club Aug. 24–25 “went pretty darned good,” according to principal coordinator Terry Lovelace.

Approximately 85 kids turned up at the Lac La Biche Bold Centre, where tryouts for brand-new bantam and peewee teams were held, as well as the midget team, which started last year.

Lovelace said even though tryouts are over, applications are still being accepted, and there will be another opportunity for kids to make the team.

“We’re having an evaluation tournament in Boyle for peewee, and midget is in Athabasca, and bantam is supposed to be moving forward in Slave Lake,” said Lovelace. The peewee and midget tournaments are both on Sept. 20; Lovelace could not confirm the date for the bantam tournament.

Last year, the midget team took players from just from the Athabasca area, so there wasn’t much of a tryout due to the limited number of kids, according to Lovelace.

By contrast, “There was some great hockey played out there this weekend at all levels,” said Lovelace, adding, “It could always better, but it went pretty well.”

For those who have already made the team, the Bulls are holding practices in Lac La Biche this week and Athabasca next week.
