Calling all volleyball lovers!

The boy’s senior Gryphon volleyball team will be launching themselves into a hard fought battle this Thursday, but the challenge won’t come from an opposing school.

Provincial champion alumni teams from 2008/2009 and 2010/2011 are bringing their talented selves back to the volleyball court, and will be sure to give the community a good show.

What will most likely be a tournament to remember starts at 7 p.m. in the east Barrhead Composite High School gym. Admission is by donation only, and all proceeds will go to the Heidi Peters trust fund.

There will be three round robin matches, so each team will have a chance to play all the others.

One of the reasons for doing the event is to benefit the present team. The Gryphons currently have two weeks off before their next tournament, and are feeling the need for some stiff competition in the meantime.

“Because they’re sitting idle for so long, we thought it was necessary to get them some action,” explained assistant coach Lou Rondeau. “So we’re trying to make a little more of an event out of it, rather than saying, ‘OK, here’s eight guys that used to play.’”

Rondeau, who hopes to see the stands filled with over 100 people, said this will probably be the last time for the community to see the present teams play in Barrhead because they don’t have any more home tournaments. For the volleyball enthusiasts in the area, it’s a great opportunity to see some talented players, both current and former, show off their stuff.

“Really they get to see quality volleyball only at the alumni tournament, and at the BCHS invitational, which we have already had,” said Rondeau. “If they want to see good volleyball, this will be it. Our present team will certainly have a challenge.”

Although the two alumni teams only go back to 2008, older alumni players are welcome to join in the fun. Anyone interested in challenging the senior boys can call Lou Rondeau at 780-674-3447.
