The weather is mild, daylight lingers until 9 p.m., and excuses for not exercising have gone … so why not play tennis?
At 7 p.m. this Thursday, an informal tennis club will meet for the first time at the town’s three new courts.
It is a chance for people of all ages and abilities to get together for a game of tennis.
Don’t worry if you’re an absolute beginner – the emphasis will be on having fun, not competing for Wimbledon.
Town of Barrhead’s Chief Administrative Officer Martin Taylor and his wife, Sharon, decided to start the informal club after being impressed by the amount of local interest in tennis.
“Sharon and I have noticed a lot of people playing,” said Martin. “Quite often two courts are being used as the same time. We thought it would be nice to start an informal club.”
The idea is for people to meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the courts behind Barrhead Composite High School and the elementary school. A nearby landmark is DeHerdt Gardens, still often referred to as Southside Greenhouses.
People should bring their own rackets and refreshment. Balls will be available – there are some left over from last year’s Alberta 55-plus Summer Games.
Martin said people would be able to play whatever form of tennis suits them: singles, doubles or mixed doubles.
“It will be just for fun,” he said. “We will probably play for two hours.”
Sharon said she would be more than happy to give tennis lessons.
