The competitive season at the Athabasca Golf and Country Club came to an end last weekend with the club championships.

Male and female members of all ages hit the course for one last big event before storing their clubs away until next year.

“It went great,” said club pro Kyle Stewart. “We had good weather and good competition.”

Around 70 golfers took part in the event, the club’s most important of the season, according to Stewart. A number of them produced distinguished performances, but only a handful wound up on top as the club’s recognized champions for 2012.

The men’s championship was won by Brett Gullion, while the women’s title went to Erin Francis.

The junior boy’s championship went to Cody Bishop while Taylor Tangedal won for junior girls. Finally, the senior men’s winner was Bill Chandler, with Helen Walker winning the senior ladies championship.

“It’s always good competition,” said Gullion, who won in a final round playoff against Jay Alix. He shot a 79, actually five strokes short of his all-time best.

“I could have played better,” he chuckled. “I just enjoy coming out to have fun and play with some friends. There are a lot of good golfers in this town.”
