Barrhead Golf Club has been described as a gem in the community.
Now it is getting some extra sparkle with a major refurbishment of the campground.
To help the Barrhead Golf &Recreation Area Society complete the project, County councillors agreed last Tuesday to donate 300 yards of gravel.
In a letter to the County, society vice-president Curtis Kager said each year his organization relies on volunteer work and help from the County to enhance the already impressive golf club.
“This past year has been no different,” he said. “Thousands of hours of volunteer work since the fall of 2013 have been poured into the golf course to reshape the driving range, to improve the irrigation system, to build new tee boxes on the 9th hole, and now to enhance the campground.”
Kager said volunteers were helping the club clean up the campground, remove dangerous trees, add power and build six new sites.
“We are contacting you in hopes that the County of Barrhead will donate 300 yards of gravel needed to complete the project,” he said. “The gravel will be used for the sites themselves and for the ring road through the campground.
“Our volunteers will provide the equipment needed to move the gravel, thus we only require the gravel to be dumped at the site.”
Earlier, the council heard that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Barrhead Golf Club.
To celebrate the occasion and honour those who have played a significant role in the club, a four-person Texas scramble golf is being organized.
The event starts at 1 p.m. on May 24 and will feature past, present and future members.
The day before there will be a free practice round for tournament players after 4 p.m.
Tournament pre-registration and a blind Calcutta draw will begin at 8 p.m. in the clubhouse.
After the tournament there will be a supper.
In a letter to the County, Barrhead Golf &Recreation Society president Michelle Rau invited the municipality to participate in the celebration.
Rau said the golf club’s 18-hole course had flourished over the last 30 years to become a “hidden gem” for golf in Alberta.
At last Tuesday’s County council meeting, County Manager Mark Oberg said the anniversary marked a significant milestone in the community.
“I think it’s important to send someone there,” said Coun. Doug Drozd.
The council agreed to be represented. The likelihood is that Oberg will play in the tournament while Reeve Bill Lee will only attend the supper.
