Curling is not just for the young, and Wilf Seal is living proof as he is one of the oldest curlers at the Barrhead Curling Rink.
On Wednesday, Dec. 11, Seal turned 95 years old, and celebrated the day before with his fellow curlers at the Barrhead Curling Rink.
Seal has been curling for over 10 years, and decided to start playing because of his love for the sport. At the age of 85, he got involved at the curling rink, and became an active and consistent curler.
“It’s a nice game,” Seal said, adding it gets him out of the house and into the fresh air.
Seal said curling also gives him time with friends at the rink.
Seal plays on the men’s seniors curling team, and last year helped the team bring home the winning title during the club’s bonspiel.
“Last year we won the bonspiel for the seniors,” Seal said, adding it was nice to win as a team.
Over the last two years Seal has transitioned from regular curling into stick curling, which involves using a stick to push the stone down the ice.
The sticks come in a variety of lengths and Seal has his on the end of his broom.
Seal plays lead on the team, and was one of the people honoured during the Kraft Celebration Tour.
Curling is not the only way Seal is involved in the community. He also spends one afternoon a week bowling, and can be found at the Barrhead Royal Canadian Legion.
Seal has been a member at the Legion for over 65 years, and is a veteran of WWII.
The senior’s league has over 15 teams, with 60 curlers making their way to the rink every Wednesday where Seal is often seen happily awaiting his turn to play.
