Dapp School and Eleanor Hall School won the boys and girls championships respectively at the annual elementary school basketball tournament, which was hosted on Friday at Dapp School.
While Dapp has won the tournament several times in recent years, this was the first time that the girls side championship had been claimed by the Eleanor Hall School team.
The tournament featured six teams on both sides, split into two pools of three. A round robin of six games were played to determine who would go on to the semi-finals and then the championship finals.
On the boys side, Dapp started out strong by defeating Westlock Elementary and W.R. Frose to finish first in pool ‘A’. Westlock Elementary School finished second with a single victory over W.R. Frose.
In pool ‘B’, Eleanor Hall (Clyde) finished first in their pool by beating Dunstable and Busby, who finished second.
In the semi-finals, Dapp defeated Busby and Westlock Elementary beat Clyde to advance to the final.
During the championship final, both teams proved to be very close but Dapp edged out Westlock Elementary 26-20.
On the girls’ side, Westlock Elementary School finished first in pool ‘A’ with victories over Fawcett and Dapp. Meanwhile, Dapp beat Fawcett to nab the second spot into the semi-finals.
Clyde reigned supreme in pool ‘B’ by beating Dunstable and Busby. Dunstable won the other spot into the semi-finals.
During the cross-over, WES defeated Dunstable, while Eleanor Hall shut down Dapp School.
In the championship final, Clyde scored a decisive victory over Westlock Elementary with a score of 30-24.
Dapp boys coach and organizer Daryl Chattargoon said it was a great tournament and there were no major problems throughout the day.
“Everyone had fun, everyone got to participate,” he said, adding that they had a lot of great volunteers for the day.
