Dart league crowns champions

Deadeye Gord Stoby, Always-wins Chris Thompson and Lucky Bob Thompson – they sound like names out of a gun-slinging Western movie, but they are actually winners from a dart league.

Every Tuesday evening since October, Stoby, Chris Thompson and Bob Thompson have been joining their rivals and literally aiming for the championship. In the end, it was Chris Thompson who captured the ladies championship trophy for the league, while Charlie Hartman was crowned men’s champion. Taking the doubles trophy was Stoby and Betty Jean Thompson, while Bob Thompson secured the trophy for most sportsmanlike.

The games take place at the Royal Canadian Legion. League co-ordinator Lyle Saumer said a dedicated group of people shows up each week to compete and have some fun at the same time. The season culminated in a championship round-robin tournament. Those whose skills proved the best emerged victorious.

“It took some hard work for them to win the trophies,” he said.

This is only the second year the league has been in existence. It started with four people, who liked to play darts, and it has grown to include nine or 10 people, Saumer said. For the third season, Saumer said he hopes to expand the league, and his plan is to challenge other Legions in the area.

The dart league is open to anyone over the age of 18, Saumer said, but participating takes a commitment of every Tuesday night.

“We don’t want people to show up one night, and then not come for the next two weeks,” Saumer said.

Royal Canadian Legion president Wade Zuk told the league members he is happy to have them play darts at the Legion.

“It’s nice to have you people come down and support the Legion,” he said. “We really appreciate it.”

Other league members who attended the awards ceremony were Lena Wierenga and Morris Thompson.
