Edmonton-based rink claims Mixed Bonspiel

The Westlock Curling Club held its Open Mixed Bonspiel Feb. 2-4 as 16 teams mixed teams took to the pebbled ice at the Servus Curling Centre. “We had 16 teams, which is not bad. I was hoping we’d get maybe 20 or 24 but 16 is not bad.

It makes for a nice draw,” said curling club president Paula Clark, adding about half the rinks were from out of town.

The Edmonton-based rink of Darren Homeniuk, Tracy Zadderey, Garyn Willett and Michelle Willett, won the ‘A’ event, sponsored by Danny Shank Holdings. The team was getting some practice before they head to the northern mixed play downs in a few weeks.

Several high school teams also took part with the R.F. Staples girls and mixed teams hitting the ice, along with a high school girls team from Barrhead.

“We had some pretty good teams playing off in the finals,” said Clark, adding she is very thankful to the sponsors for their continued support.

The ‘B’ event, sponsored by the Westlock News, went to the local rink of Emily Clark, Cole Huppertz, Danny Shank and Colin Decker.

Terry Sheehan’s Westlock rink of Grace Feheley, Vernon Glebe and Ann-Marie Carnegie won the ‘C’ event, sponsored by Matt and Selena Gook.

“It was a good bonspiel and fun was had by all,” said Clark.

The next event for the curling club is the Men’s Bonspiel March 9-11, but before that it will be hosting high schools zones Feb. 23-24.

There will be four girls teams, six boys teams and five mixed teams vying for a chance to play in provincials. Each category includes a team from R.F. Staples School.

The club will also be hosting the Pembina Hills Junior High Regional Bonspiel March 14.
