Young athletes received recognition for all their hard work this year at last week’s Edwin Parr Composite Athletics Banquet.

The school hosted the annual event where they honoured all of the students who played a sport and got active in 2011-12, and the gymnasium was packed.

“It was fantastic, we had nearly 230 people there. It could be our biggest sports banquet ever,” said athletic director Chad LeMessurier. “It was just a great way to culminate everything. It was definitely a night filled with positives.”

Each EPC team had its moment in the sun and athletes in every sport were honoured with awards.

The highlight of the evening was the athlete of the year awards, with boys and girls in each grade being lauded for their achievements.

The male winners included Max Elgert (Grade 8), Thomas Weber (Grade 9), Damian MacKay (Grade 10), Neil Topola (Grade 11) and Ben Shopland (Grade 12).

The female winners were Kyla Gyte (Grade 8), Kennidi Jewell (Grade 9), Gen Annand (Grade 10), Brooke Padlewski (Grade 11) and Kaitlyn Crest and Sarah Windeler (Grade 12).

LeMessurier noted that the selection committee had a very difficult time handing out the awards, and that some of them had as many as four finalists.

“That says something about our program. We have a pretty deep talent pool.”

There was also an addition to the Wall of Fame, as volleyball pro Nathan Bennett was inducted.
