A trio of Edwin Parr Composite badminton players will represent the school at provincials in Calgary this weekend.

Competing at the zone tournament in Edmonton last Wednesday, Damian Mackay, Neil Topola and Chris Krulicki all qualified for the provincial event.

In intermediate boys singles, Mackay went through the zone round robin undefeated before winning a tough semi final game; he ultimately lost in the final, but still qualified for the Calgary event.

Topola and Krulicki finished second as a team among senior boys, dropping a team in the semi-final that had beaten them in the round robin to advance to the championship game. They lost in the final, but the winning team cannot make it to provincials, so the EPC team will take their place.

Shaelynn Beach also had a terrific showing at zones, finishing fourth amongst junior girls.

The four earned their trip to zones with a strong showing at the conference championships in Westlock April 18. Topola, Krulicki and Mackay all won gold, while Beach won silver.

Other EPC students in action in Westlock included Alex Flynn and Nelly Sherbrooke (silver in junior mixed doubles) and Deacon Schilling (bronze in junior boys singles).

In the three years coach Erin Francis has guided the team, itís the first time anyone has qualified for provincials.

ìItís the best showing weíve had since Iíve been coach,î said Francis of the effort at the zone tournament. ìIt was such a good day. They all played very well.î
