Barrhead was well represented at the 2012 Edmonton Journal Indoor Games finals March 17, with 34 students running as hard as they could to bring hardware home.

When it was all over, one team had succeeded in that aim — the elementary boys 8x200 m team, which won silver with a time of 4:17.13.

The team, made up of members Troy Szewczuk, Anson Li, Adam Flemmer, Adam Mueller, Daniel Schiller, Teron Callihoo, Mason Robblee, T.K. Mueller, Levi Coutu and Tate Schmidt, “shone brightly,” said coach Laurin Lamothe.

In winning their silver medal, the boys had to run in three races on Saturday. Their opening race saw them put up a time of 4:22.20, which was good enough to win their heat by 0.60 seconds over Ste. Jean-d’Arc.

The boys’ semifinal race saw them once again win their heat, with a time of 4:17.27, which was the fourth-fastest overall time.

That win moved the boys into the championship final race, where their time of 4:17.13 was two seconds faster than third-place Sir Alexander Mackenzie, but nearly eight seconds slower than first-place Keheewin.

On the elementary girls side, the team of Samantha Hollingsworth, Jennifer Sutherland, Lauren Bernes, Hailey Anderson, Olivia Walker, Mira Agnew, Ashlyn Rentz, Caitlin Hudson, Bella Ricci and Angela Johnson finished sixth overall out of 250 teams in the competition, Lamothe said.

In their opening race, the girls won their heat with a time of 4:32.50. That sent them into the semifinals, where their time of 4:29.90 was the fastest of the second-place teams, and earned them a spot in the final.

The final saw the girls clock a slower time than in the semifinals, at 4:31.68, placing them sixth of the six teams in the race.

In addition to the two elementary school teams, BCHS also sent two teams to the meet — a junior and a senior team.

The junior team consisted entirely of Grade 7 students Morgan McKain, Jill Starman, Madison Koberstein, Shaelynn Borle, Josie Michaud, Aisling O’Neil, Vivian Yiu, McKenna Dievert, Katelyn Hamilton.

Their first race on Saturday was the semifinal round, in which the girls won their heat with a time of 4:04.40, which was the fifth fastest in the heats.

In the final, the junior high team put up a time of 4:07.98, which was four-and-a-half seconds behind third-place Leduc.

Barrhead’s senior high girls team was made up of Sean Starman, Sonja Larison, Darian Measures, Katelyn Cameron, Rebecca Lotholz, Hannah Schmidt, Jill Starman and Morgan McKain.

Their time of 3:58.04 in the semifinal round was the fourth-best time of the round, and moved them into the final.

In the final, the girls cut their time by nearly a second and a half, but fell one place to fifth in the race.

Lamothe said the day was a fun one for all the students and parents involved.

“The runners were supported by a loud and large group of enthusiastic parents, family and friends that attended the various races throughout the day, capping things off with the stellar performances they witnessed in the evening’s finals,” he said.
