The Edwin Parr Composite senior girls basketball team made their home crowd proud last weekend by winning their own tournament.

The girls came out on top in the EPC tournament for the very first time, making it both a big accomplishment and a bit of a relief, according to coach Wade Hicks.

“It’s nice to get over that hump. They were so happy to get this one behind them,” said the coach, who watched his team bear down and hold back the aggressive and talented Morinville team in a very close final game (41-39 for EPC).

“Beating Morinville is really nice because we’ll be battling them all year. Today we took a pretty big step as a team.”

They’ll take another such step later this month when they travel to San Diego to take part in a tournament. While there they’ll also take in a Los Angeles Clippers game.

After finishing fifth in their first tournament in Lloydminster earlier this month, the team is an impressive 6-2 to start the season. That’s a start that should lend them plenty of momentum as the season goes on.

“Early in the season, it’s nice to have that win to build off of.”
