It’s the volleyball event of the year for Athabasca – the annual Edwin Parr Composite senior high tournament held at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

Boasting 16 teams in each of the senior boys and senior girls draws, it is one of the largest tournaments outside of a major Alberta city. It uses all four courts in the Multiplex’s fieldhouse.

Predators senior boys head coach Chad LeMessurier is excited about the event, even if he will be without his top player.

“It’s going to be awesome, since we have gone back to a system that is more comfortable for us,” he said.

“And some of our younger guys have really exceeded my expectations, so that has taken some of the pressure off as well.”

Pool play for both the boys and girls goes Friday with the playoff slated for Saturday and the finals are set for 6: 30 p,m.

On the boys side, EPC will play Ecole Beausejour from Plamondon at 9 a.m., then face Thorhild at 11 a.m. and finish off their round robin action against Mayerthorpe at 1 p.m.

For the girls, head coach Lance Gyte will be missing five members of this squad this weekend, meaning he will be looking to some younger players to step up and hopefully use the event to help improve their skills on the court.

The girls will play their round robin games at the same time as the boys and a similar schedule.

They will take on Plamondon’s Ecole Beausejour first at 9 a.m. then face Thorhild at 11 a.m. before concluding the round robin versus Slave Lake at 1 p.m.
