Athabasca hosted a large basketball tournament this past weekend with teams from all over north central Alberta competing.
Edwin Parr Composite High School senior girls team coach Wade Hicks said the team did well this weekend.
“We won our first game against RF Staples,” he said. “I think it was by about 16 or 17 points.”
The team carried that momentum forward.
“Then we had to play Rimbey junior/senior high in the semifinals, and the girls played really well against Rimbey, and we took Rimbey down pretty easily,” he said. “Then we ran into a really tough team, St. Joe’s from Grande Prairie. They took it to us pretty good.”
The EPC girls had won the home tournament for two years in a row prior to this year’s tournament, but Hicks has no complaints about the team’s performance.
“I think they played really well,” he said. “We have eight first-year players on that team, and it was their first finals, and they were pretty nervous.”
Hicks said that hopefully the next time the team makes finals, they will be more calm and collected and ready to play.
“The tough part is making finals,” he said. “I thought they played really well this weekend.”
The EPC senior boys team also put in a valiant effort at the tournament, but did not make it the finals side of the tournament.
