The Fiesta Days Slo-Pitch tournament in Boyle was deemed a success despite the inclement weather that brought a premature end to the three-day event last weekend.
Friday and Saturday provided perfect baseball weather for the annual event, but the final day of the tournament on Sunday was met with rain that ultimately necessitated the cancellation of the final games.
Even so, the tournament (hosted by the Boyle Lions Club) proved to be enjoyable for the teams in attendance, according to club president James Onischuk.
“Everyone had a real blast. We got a lot of positive comments about how much fun people were having,” he said.
“It’s too bad the weather couldn’t cooperate on Sunday.”
As a result of the early finish, two teams split the prize money in the ‘B’ event while four remaining teams split the winnings in the ‘A’ event.
Though the 16 teams (eight of them local) were in pursuit of the rewards, the focus was on recreation.
“We just like to keep it a fun event, and not too competitive,” he said.
Onischuk and the Lions offered thanks to all the athletes, both local and visiting, who played hard and had fun at the event. They also recognized the Boyle Seniors for providing the concessions over the weekend.
He also credited Dmytro Sawka for organizing the event and the Village of Boyle for providing the diamonds.
“Thanks (to all) for coming and making it a fun and interesting ball tournament.”
