They set out at the start of the season with clear goals in mind.

On March 19, the Barrhead pee wee Flyers visited the Whitecourt Brutes for Game 2 of the league championship final.

The Flyers took Game 1 from the Brutes 4-3, and completed their run to the championship with an exciting overtime win in Whitecourt.

At the start of the game, the Flyers came out flying. But it was the Brutes who would find the back of the net first, with a goal near the end of the first period. The squad from Barrhead kept the pressure up, but as the second period wound down to a close, it was the Brutes who were holding a 2-1 lead.

“The kids didn’t keep running with the ball near the end of the second period, so we ended up going into the dressing room down a goal,” said Flyers coach Glen Starman.

In the third period, the Flyers found an extra gear in their game, and took it to the Brutes.

“The guys played with lots of heart, and they used their heads. When it came down to it, they really stepped it up when we asked them to,” said Starman.

Bryan Fountain is by far the biggest player on the Flyers, and although he missed Game 1 of series, he let his presence be felt in the final 20 minutes.

Fountain scored the tying goal at about the midway point of the third period, sending the game to overtime.

“You can see that the goal really took the wind out of their sails,” said Starman.

About five minutes into the extra frame, Fountain put his stamp on the game by scoring the game-winning goal.

With the exciting win, the Flyers were crowned league champions.

“This is what we had set out to do. Winning the championship was definitely one of the goals we set out to accomplish at the beginning of the season,” said Starman

The Flyers got goals from Declan Kummer, Darien Cyre and two from Fountain.

With the win, the Flyer have claimed three out of a possible four banners in their successful 2010/2011 season.

“From a coaching perspective, it’s awesome seeing these kids accomplish something they’ll probably never forget. This could be a once in a lifetime thing for a kid in minor sports. Now we just have to try and get the fourth one at provincials this weekend in Drumheller,” said Starman.
