There was sunny weather and a good turnout for the Men’s Open at the Westlock Golf Club last weekend, along with plenty of excitement.

On top of the regular activity involved with any major golf tournament, club pro Kevin Lynes said yet another golfer hit a hole-in-one — the second within a week and the sixth of the season.

“It’s good that somebody got one in the tournament, but even better that it was on a sponsored hole,” he said.

A trio of local car dealerships sponsored the $10,000 dollar prize on Hole 11, Lynes said, and Westlock golfer John Hutton cashed in.

“That was pretty exciting,” he said.

Hutton walked away with a nice prize, but didn’t claim the tournament title. That honour went to Fort McMurray’s Ryan Coish, who took the top prize last year, as well.

Coish won the championship flight with a three-round gross total of 225, just three strokes better than the winner of the first flight, Chase Provencal, who scored a 228.

“It was good that way; it was very close,” Lynes said. “It came right down to the wire.”

Justin Herman trailed Coish in the championship flight with a score of 236 while Rick Lukan trailed Provencal in the first flight with a score of 243.

Jim Wold won the second flight with 246, followed by Jim Gawryluk with 256. Al Baron lead the third flight with 251, followed closely by Trevor McIntyre with 254.

Lynes said he was happy with the turnout, with 63 golfers taking part in tournament, coming from as far away as Fort McMurray.

“It’s down a bit from last year, but it’s always tough on a long weekend,” he said.

There wasn’t much break in the action at the golf course, either, with the Ladies’ Open scheduled for Aug. 11-12, a mixed best-ball tournament scheduled for Aug. 19 and the club championship taking place on the Aug. 25 weekend.
