A unique fundraiser will take over the gymnasium at Whispering Hills Primary School on Apr. 11 with the hopes of making it an annual event.
Jon LeMessurier has organized a fun four-on-four coed indoor soccer tournament with the proceeds from the tournament going to a orphanage in Zambia that he will be travelling to this summer.
Sporting the moniker, the Athabasca Cup, LeMessurier has so far attracted five teams to participate and wrangled his father to operate a concession, to which Buy-Low Foods has graciously donated all the food and drinks, allowing all that money to go straight to the charity as well.
“It is all to help buy supplies for an orphanage for kids with HIV,” Le-Messurier said.
“I had thought about doing something like this, so I ran it by Albert (Assaf) and he thought it would be a great idea. My hope is hold this annually and to pick a different charity every year to support.”
In addition to the concession sales, each player paid $20 to take part and since WHPS is donating the gym, all of that money will also be going to the orphanage.
He added he would like expand the event with more teams and sponsors next year.
“We have had some great sponsors, it’s really cool to see how many have come around,” he stated.
“We have prizes for the teams, door prizes for those that come by to watch, so everyone is welcome drop in and enjoy the action.”
Games begin at 9 a.m. and will run until the finals in the afternoon.
LeMessurier added the concession will also have breakfast sandwiches available and other lunch items.
“Why not come done and watch. I’m hoping to have more activities next year,” he said.
