There are lots of ways for adults to get active in Athabasca.
“The best way to know what is going on in the area is to check online, but if there is one sport in particular someone is interested in, they can always call us and we have a master list so we can put them in touch with the right people in town who organize the sports,” noted Athabasca Regional Multiplex manager of regional recreation services Rob Balay.
Volleyball usually starts up at the Multiplex in October and runs every Wednesday evening from 8-10 p.m. until March.
Regular adult curling fun leagues start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday beginning in October as well. Anyone can drop in and use the curling ice at any time as long as there isn’t a bonspiel going on.
Starting in September there is also regular public skating on Monday from 7:15- 8:05 p.m. and on Saturday from 4:45-5:45 p.m.
Floor hockey runs from September through April on Thursday nights from 7:30-10 p.m. There is also recreational ice hockey.
“It’s about helping to promote healthy living and supporting the community and the athletic facilities and areas around the municipality,” Balay said.
Community members are encouraged to come up with their own recreational ideas, according to Dustin Pysyk, Multiplex assistant manager
“Any ideas are welcome and we are happy to assist in trying to get the process started and make it a success.”
One example is ultimate Frisbee, spearheaded by Alex Denonville.
“There are no referees or anything like that and all the plays are called and determined safe or not by the players and the teams,” he said. “It helps to build teamwork and create a sense of good sportsmanship because it’s all done on the honour system.”
There is also adult slo-pitch teams, soccer, kung fu, badminton, basketball, tennis, and other athletic activities that anyone can do at any time at the Multiplex for a $5 drop-in fee that covers the cost of renting equipment and the use of the space.
