For a small school, the Boyle Huskies senior volleyball teams sure gave some of the larger schools at the EPC tournament at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex last weekend a run for their money.

The girls took home second on the consolation side, missing out on the championship draw on a three-set heartbreak loss in their final match Friday.

They fell to Lac La Biche in two close sets and then easily handled Kinuso before losing to Ecole Plamondon 10-25, 25-18, 6-15 to place third in their pool.

In B-side consolation play Saturday, the girls needed three sets to beat both Andrew and the host Edwin Parr teams to pit themselves against St. Joe’s from Whitecourt in the final.

Despite staying close, the Huskies couldn’t find their way to the title.

“The girls made a number of improvements, most significant being an increased serve accuracy,” said head coach Huyana Taylor.

For the boys, inconsistent play nearly cost them in pool play, losing to Lac La Biche then beating Kinuso and barely squeaking by Plamondon in three sets. That style did cost them Saturday as they lost in their quarterfinal in three sets.

“I felt we could have won that match and it’s good to play these better teams as it shows us what we need to work on,” said coach Darrell Bergmann.

“Being consistent the entire match, that’s what we have to be, we can’t be beating ourselves. The big thing is we would have the momentum and then give it away. We can’t let opponents go on a run like we did.”
