Golf for Hope in Athabasca

The second annual Jeff Johnson Road To Hope Golf Classic is almost here. The event will be held at the Athabasca Golf and Country Club on Friday, August 26.

The second annual Jeff Johnson Road To Hope Golf Classic is almost here.

The event will be held at the Athabasca Golf and Country Club on Friday, August 26.

Last year’s inaugural event was a big success and raised approximately $7,000 for the local non-profit organization that provides transportation and support to cancer patients being treated outside of the community.

Johnson, member of the legislative assembly of Alberta (MLA) for Athabasca-Redwater, was pleased to associate himself with the event last year and looks forward to taking part once again.

“They asked me to be a part of it, and it was a privilege I couldn’t pass up. It’s a fantastic charity,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful course, and it’s a great way to have some fun and raise some money for a good charity. You never know when your family is going to need those supports.”

Indeed, cancer can strike anyone at anytime, and nobody is ever really prepared for it. Road To Hope president Madena Reimer once received that shocking and horrible diagnosis, so she knows all too well the impact it can have physically, emotionally and even financially.

That’s why she (and everybody at Road To Hope) works so hard to make a difference by organizing events like the golf tournament.

“A lot of people enjoy golfing in the community, so we thought this would be a great thing,” said Reimer.

“Last year was a huge success. We had over 90 golfers so we were really excited; we never thought it would get that big for the first time. We’re hoping this year will be bigger and better and that more people come out and support the cause.”

The cost to participate in this year’s event is $125 per person. The event will also feature a ball drop, just like last year. Tickets for the drop will be $5, and the winner will get $1,000.

On the day of the tournament, registration will begin at 8 a.m. and golfers will tee off at 9 a.m.

“It’s about having a day of fun and knowing the money is supporting cancer patients in the community,” said Reimer.

“It’s a great cause for a great community.”

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and golfers will tee off at 9 a.m.

Preparations for the event are currently underway.
