Good start for senior Gryphons

It didn’t take long for Barrhead Composite’s senior Gryphon girls volleyball team to show off what they’ve got. The girls went undefeated in their first tournament of the year in Barrhead over the weekend, claiming first place.

It didn’t take long for Barrhead Composite’s senior Gryphon girls volleyball team to show off what they’ve got.

The girls went undefeated in their first tournament of the year in Barrhead over the weekend, claiming first place.

The tournament began on Friday, where the girls played Whitecourt, Morinville and Bell Rose, defeating all three.

Saturday brought more victories for the Gryphons, as the girls took a win against St. Paul in the quarter finals, Grande Prairie in the semi-finals, and Beaverlodge in the finals.

“They did a really good job this weekend. I was happy,” said Kyle Becker, head coach of the senior girls. “The things they’ve worked on in practice they did well.”

Senior Gryphon boys had a good start to the season as well.

The team won the first match against Motinville on Friday, as well as the second against Bell Rose. In the quarter finals, the boys defeated Piegeon Lake to go on to the semi-finals against Athabasca.

After winning the first game and losing the second, the Gryphons won the final game and claimed a victory over Athabasca.

Undefeated, the boys went into the finals against LSL from Edmonton. Although the game was a close one, the Gryphons were defeated by the hard-playing Barons.

The boys walked away with silver medals, which senior boys coach Rod Calihoo thought was a pretty good start. There are quite a few new faces on the team this year, he said, so everyone is working on finding their place.

“We have a very equal squad, and it’s very difficult at this point in time to define who is going to play where,” said Calihoo. “We’re really very fortunate to have the calibre of players this year that we do.”

This weekend the senior boys and girls head to the University of Alberta to take on bigger schools and tougher competition.

“We’re looking forward to doing that,” said Calihoo. “We get into it pretty hard.”

“This weekend will be a pretty tough test, but it’s nice to play those teams to see a different level of ball and push ourselves,” added Becker.
