The Westlock Grey Lions started their Alberta West Central Baseball Association schedule with a big win over the Edmonton Blues.
Despite some opening-season rust, the Grey Lions made quick work of the Blues in a 12-5 win last Tuesday night at Keller Field. Assistant manager Rick Sereda said they’re happy to notch their first ‘W’ of the campaign.
“It was our first game of the year, there were some fielding errors and some issues that we want to try and touch up on and improve, but for the first game it was OK,” Sereda said.
Having plated 12 runs Sereda was pleased with the team’s offensive output.
“We had a couple of really strong performances. The bats were really working all around, but Rob Rau and Sheldon McGonahy had a strong day,” Sereda said.
As it has been in years past, the club’s teamwork and positive attitude was key to their success.
“As always the attitude in our dugout is awesome. We were down early and really only gained the lead and really pulled away in the later part of the game, but we were very relaxed,” he said.
“It was just a wonderful atmosphere to play in. We look forward to playing every game just because of those guys in the dugout.”
Despite the win, Sereda said there are some issues that need to be addressed as the season progresses.
“We need to touch up our defence. We had a couple communication errors and a couple misplays that cost us some easy outs,” he said. “Defence and pitching always win baseball games.”
Sereda expressed confidence the issues should be an easy fix.
With their first game of the year under their belts, Sereda said they’re already on pace for another successful season.
“I think the season looks very bright for us. We picked up another younger player that has Red Lion experience from years past, Warren Vowel, and I think his athleticism will help us.
“We’re trying to bolster our pitching staff a little this year with a couple of guys and I think the season looks very bright.”
