Gummow excited for opportunity

Imagine skating with some of the players who have their names delicately engraved on the Stanley Cup, who have won numerous awards and trophies for doing what they do best.

Dale Gummow can.

For a small price he will be playing against some of the biggest names in Montreal Canadiens’ history.

Gummow will be playing one of the forward positions for the Barrhead Old Vets, and is excited for the opportunity.

On Dec. 5, you can witness the Old Vets take on some of the big leagues during a game that is looking to raise money for the Barrhead Aquatic Centre project.

Thanks to the Barrhead Parks and Recreation Committee, this event is coming to life.

For Gummow, the names are familiar, and he has watched many of the Alumni players over the years on T.V., but the most important part of the game isn’t the team he is playing against, but the team he is playing with.

“It’s exciting to play with my son,” he said, adding that it is also a pleasure to be playing with some of the other midgets who were on the Steelers during his coaching years.

“He is now in Vancouver, and I don’t get to see him that much, just to get out and skate with him, and skate with some of the others guys I coached… and mingle with the Montreal Canadiens,” he said, is an exciting opportunity for him.

Gummow has over 40 years of experience in the sport, and spent the years 1994 and 1995 coaching the Barrhead Midget Steelers.

“That is when we won in ’94 and ’95 the league, and also won the provincials that year,” he said, adding that his son Kirk was on the team during that time, so he encouraged him to join the Old Vets for this fundraiser.

For Gummow, another important part of the event is supporting the pool, and letting people know that it is important to come out and show their support for the project.

“I think it gets everybody to one spot, and the more communication the better,” he said. “I am hoping that we can raise more money… and that someday down the road we have a pool for the community.”

“Everybody come on out and have a laugh,” Gummow said.

Competition isn’t much of an issue when it comes to Gummow, who said that the reason for the game is simply to have fun.

“It will be a fun time, I think that is what it is about, not really about whether we win or lose,” he said.

Also playing on the Barrhead Old Vets are: Kirk Gummow, Jim Birnie, JC Lane, Paul De Champlain, John Scwec, Steve Hodgetts, Trow Gravel, Matt Visser, Mark Baird and Heath Klein.

Goalies for the team are: Carl Baker, Tadd Loomis, and Bryan Ryder.
