Organizers of this year’s Jeff Johnson Road To Hope Golf Classic are hoping the third time is the charm.
The first two iterations of the event (which this year will be held on Friday, Aug. 24 at the Athabasca Golf and Country Club) were certainly successful, last year’s alone raising a little over $11,000 for the local non-profit organization that provides transportation and support to cancer patients being treated outside of the community.
Registration and sponsorship for this year’s event is looking strong, but spots for both will remain open right up until the first ball is teed up.
“We will always make sure we can accommodate absolutely everyone who wants to attend,” explained Road To Hope vice-chair Cindy Bizon.
The event features 18 holes of Texas scramble golf with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and tee off at 9 a.m. There will be a number of fun contests like a team putting competition as well as a food hole and much more.
After they’re off the course, golfers will gather for a banquet and silent auction.
“This is our big fundraiser for the year,” noted Bizon.
“We’re just thankful for everything we get, and the people who participate with us.”
Though preparations are well underway, organizers, volunteers and supporters will continue to add to it in the coming weeks.
“It’s amazing how corporations will just show up on the day of with items (for the auction),” she said.
Athabasca-Sturgeon-Redwater MLA and Minister of Education Jeff Johnson will once again lend his name and efforts to the event after having done so in each of the previous years.
“We’re fortunate that Minister Johnson has lent his name to our cause. He fully supports Road To Hope,” said Bizon.
All that’s left now is to hope for good weather on the day of the event.
“It is just a relaxed, no stress day on the golf course.”
