The season has gotten off to a slow start for the Boyle Huskies senior boys basketball squad.
The team had just one tune up match in December, a victory in Redwater, but the holiday break proved to be too much for them and the Huskies have lost each game since returning the court last week.
The boys lost by a rather wide margin to Redwater in an exhibition game on their home court and then couldn’t make much headway against some stiff competition at a tournament this past weekend in Lac La Biche.
The Huskies lost all three games they played against Lac La Biche, St. Mary’s from Westlock and to Bonnyville.
“None of the scores were really close, but the boys definitely could play with any of those teams,” said head coach Darrell Bergmann.
“We just have to play consistent for longer stretches. Against Lac La Biche, we were down 20 after the first quarter, and then played fairly even the rest of the way.
“Against Westlock, each quarter was close, but we lost each quarter by 4 points to lose by 20 and against Bonnyville we were up 23-19, but ended up losing by a wide margin.”
Bergmann stated the boys just weren’t able to put together a solid 40 minutes.
What hasn’t helped them either is the team lost their starting centre Dallan Bencharsky for the season over the holiday due to a hand injury.
“However, other players have stepped up their game and are making adjustments,” he added.
The boys hope to have things more ironed out for their home tournament on Jan. 30 and 31.
As for the Huskies senior girls, they used a great stretch game to earn a win Wednesday 49-45 over Redwater.
The girls were also at the tournament in Lac La Biche on the weekend, but the results from their games were not available at press time.
