Ice freeze Athabasca

Westlock’s Pee Wee Ice will advance to the next round of provincial ‘C’ playoffs against Barrhead this week after defeating the Athabasca Hawks 4-3 last Thursday.

Westlock’s Pee Wee Ice will advance to the next round of provincial ‘C’ playoffs against Barrhead this week after defeating the Athabasca Hawks 4-3 last Thursday.

Their 4-3 victory last Thursday in Athabasca, following their 10-6 victory the week before, put them up 14-9 in the two-game total-goals series.

“It didn’t come as a surprise at all,” said coach Don Medcke. “I’m proud of the boys. They work hard and push through adversity.

He said the game was a very close game, similar to the 10-6 home victory in the first game of the series, in which the Ice trailed for most of the game and pushed through at the end to take the impressive four-goal lead.

The score ended up closer in the second game, but was nonetheless enough to secure the Ice a spot in the second round.

They will play the first game of the second round versus Barrhead this Tuesday, Feb. 1 at the Jubilee Arena in Westlock.

“I think it will be a close game and a close series,” Medcke said.

He said he was looking forward to the series because it would be a good challenge for the boys, and because the ongoing hockey rivalry between Westlock and Barrhead will add an extra element of excitement.

“It’s always been a good rivalry,” Medcke said, adding many of these boys haven’t had the chance to be part of it. “It will be a good experience for the boys. As long as we keep working hard, we’ll be fine.”

In league action, the Ice scored a 6-3 win Saturday on the road in Beaumont, then followed it up with a 5-1 home win over CNN Sunday.
