The Westlock T-Birds kicked butt this weekend as the junior high girls squad scored gold at the Pembina Hills Junior High Divisional Tournament held Friday and Saturday in Barrhead.
In a dominant 30-18 win over Neerlandia in the Saturday-night final, the girls are now eligible to advance to the zones held March 9-10.
A proud coach Kelvin Buchanan complimented his club’s performance over the weekend and attributes the victory to the overall team effort.
“They played a team game. Every last one of them did their part to make it a winning situation,” said the coach following the win.
With hopes that his team will keep the momentum going for the zones next weekend, coach Buchanan believes they stand a good chance at bringing home another medal as long as they put forth the same effort.
“They need to stay motivated and the main thing we tell the girls is if we play our game they have to come to us,” he said.
With high hopes for the upcoming zone tournament, the team plans to keep their strategy the same hoping their winning streak will continue, the coach said.
