The Barrhead Junior Varsity Girl Gryphons defeated their rivals from Athabasca 45-20, during a busy night at Barrhead Composite High School.

On Tuesday, Jan. 12 the school played host to 10 games with teams coming in from Athabasca, Neerlandia and Swan Hills.

Junior varsity coach Karen Fischer said she was very pleased with the team’s performance, especially considering the calibre of their opponents.

Athabasca is traditionally a strong contender and are the zone’s defending champions.

“The game, from start to finish, was very fast paced, aggressive play,” she said. “I was pleased with the level of our play, their effort and the cohesiveness of play, especially considering they never played together before.”

Fischer said the team played an especially strong second quarter.

“Our full court press was especially effective for us,” she said, adding that scoring came from all members of the Gryphons.

Leading the way in scoring were Shae Brost with nine points, Tiara Meier, eight points, and Josie Michaud and Annika Koekkoek both chipped in with six points.
