The junior varsity girls basketball team from Edwin Parr Composite went undefeated at their host tournament last weekend.

The girls played four games last Friday and Saturday and won them all to claim the tournament championship. Their first game was a 39-27 triumph over Cold Lake, followed by a 50-47 victory over R.F. Staples. On Saturday they trumped Hinton 70-20 and then dropped Morinville 43-24.

Though they won all their games, it wasn’t an easy tournament for the local girls, according to head coach Janelle Tarrant.

“There were a couple rough games but we pulled through and it ended up really good,” she said.

“We played very well.”

Over the course of the weekend, the EPC team showed their skills in games that were both extremely competitive (R.F. Staples) and decidedly lopsided (Hinton).

“I’m very happy with them,” said Tarrant. “A lot of new skills came out this weekend. We’ve really improved.”

The successful tournament gives the girls plenty of momentum as they prepare for the zone championships this weekend, which will also be held at Edwin Parr. The team is currently ranked second in the zone, so they can be considered one of the favorites in the tournament.

“It’ll be a lot of fun.”
