The Barrhead Recreation Department is providing recreational programs designed to get the kids out of the house and into the beautiful parks of Barrhead.

“We’re having a sports day, where the kids get to play capture the flag and soccer with their friends. It all about getting them out and active instead of playing video games and being cooped up in the house. Keepings kids active is more important these days compared to the past,” said summer program student Jason Wever.

On July 28, a large group of kids took part in activities at Cecile Martin Park that featured an intense game of capture the flag and a fun soccer game.

“Everyday we put on something different. We’ve already had a camping trip to Wild Waters and a photo scavenger hunt this week,” said Wever.

The group of kids were split up into two teams and were charged with penetrating the opposing team’s side to capture their coloured flag without being tagged and sent to jail.

“This is my first time out this year, and it’s a lot of fun. Usually I’m playing hockey on my Nintendo Wii. This might be just a little more fun than playing the Wii,” said Dalton Waggoner.

Once the game started, both teams positioned sentry’s to guard their flag, while platoons of attackers dodged, ducked and weaved every which way they could in an attempt to capture the other team’s flag.

“The main thing about the program is to give the kids an opportunity to do things they normally wouldn’t do,” said Wever.

Each team’s jail was chalk full of arrested attackers soon after the game began. The jailed intruders could be heard shouting out distress calls in order to be saved by their comrades.

“I thought he was trying to save his friends in jail, but Chase took the flag instead,” said Katie Coen following her team’s loss.

The summer students also got involved with the game, and, despite their imposing size over the younger combatants, they were quite often seen with their heads held low in their opponent’s jail.

Barrhead Rec. has many more activities planned this summer that will keep kids active through August. For more information on programs and how to sign up your son or daughter, contact the Rec. office at 780-674-2532 or you can email them at [email protected].
