Clyde’s Austin Tremblay captured a gold medal at the Rural Wrestling Provincials held in Edson Feb. 27-28.

The Grade 11 R.F. Staples School student is no stranger to the podium as he added to a collection that also includes a gold medal from the Western Canada Summer Games and silver medal from the 2011 nationals.

Tremblay, who has been wrestling confidently in the 65 kg weight class all year, had no problems dominating his opponents during the tournament.

The tourney itself proved to be a walk in the park for Tremblay as he admitted the competition was not as challenging as he anticipated it would be.

“It was quite a bit easier than competitions in the past. There wasn’t any high competition there,” said Tremblay.

In the final match, Tremblay was not awarded the pin after his opponent had to forfeit due to injury.

“It did not go to a pin because the ref called the match because the kid got hurt,” Tremblay said.

With another gold medal in hand Tremblay now sets his sights on his next match which will be held in Okotoks at the Foothills Composite High School on March 9-10 for the ASAA Wrestling High School Provincial Championships before preparing for the 2012 nationals.

It’s been a great 12 months of wrestling for Tremblay, who captured a silver medal at the 2011 nationals after posting a 6-1 record.

At the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops, B.C. last August Tremblay went undefeated bringing home a gold medal for the 63 kg weight category, which is especially remarkable since he had been used to competing at 58 kg.

“It was a lot harder than what I expected, because I went up a weight class for this tournament,” he said following the win.

“They were all a lot bigger than me, because they probably weighed about 69 kg and cut down.”
