Ladies have a blast at curling bonspiel

It was hard to say where the decibel levels were highest: on ice or off. When teams arrived for Barrhead Curling Club’s 2014 Ladies Bonspiel, they knew they would be taking part in a weekend fun fest.

When teams arrived for Barrhead Curling Club’s 2014 Ladies Bonspiel, they knew they would be taking part in a weekend fun fest.

The event was part serious competition, part serious socializing.

From 6:30 p.m. on Friday to about 10 p.m. on Saturday the Barrhead Curling Rink became a happening place. This year saw 12 teams competing: eight from Barrhead, the others from Hinton, High Prairie, Athabasca and Namao.

While there may have been a party mood off ice, the mood was one of determination on the rink.

By Saturday evening, six teams battled it out in the finals. When the dust settled it was Barrhead’s Bandola team that was crowned champions.

Barrhead Curling Club manager Tammy Caughlin, a Bandola member, was delighted with the way the weekend had gone.

“It’s all about having fun,” she said.

Event sponsors were Barrhead Ford, Leon’s Carpet and Paints and Beauty Bound.
